Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is a low molecular weight acute phase protein produced in the liver in
response to a series of stimuli such as viral or bacterial infection, trauma or other causes of
inflammation and tissue damage. During an acute phase response the concentration of SAA in blood
rises dramatically up to 1000-fold excess above normal circulating levels. SAA has been
demonstrated to have utility in predicting renal allograft rejections and in assessing the inflammatory
status of arthritis. SAA has also been used to monitor recovery from infections and inflammation, with
the levels falling rapidly in response to therapy.
