iBP-1 is also known as placental protein 12 (PP12), which is a protein found to be an IGFBP1 gene in the human gene code. The IGF-binding protein (IGFBPs) is believed to be an important factor in the regulation of fetal and neonatal growth. As previously reported, IGFBPs in umbilical cord serum (FCS) are dependent on the growth and metabolic status of the fetus. The protein can be detected in the cervical secretions of pregnant women with early labor and can therefore be determined whether there is an increased risk of premature birth. The amount of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 at the maternal-fetal interface suggests that the binding protein participates in the formation of an abnormally invasive placenta (shallow placental invasion). Barely circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 and increased insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 value can contribute to a restricted placenta and thus to fetal growth.
