Humanes Choriongonadotropin (hCG) ist ein Glycoprotein Hormon, das bereits kurz nach der Befruchtung von der Plazenta gebildet wird. Im Verlaufe einer normalen Schwangerschaft kann hCG schon sieben Tage nach der Empfängnis im Urin oder im Serum nachgewiesen werden (1‑4). Die hCG-Konzentration steigt sehr rasch an, erreicht mit dem ersten Ausbleiben der Regelblutung häufig einen Wert von über 100 mIU/ml (2-5) und gipfelt schließlich in der 10. bis 12. Schwangerschaftswoche in einem Bereich von 30000-100000 mIU/ml. Das frühzeitige Auftauchen des hCG nach der Befruchtung und der darauf folgende Konzentrationsanstieg im Frühstadium der Schwangerschaft machen es zu einem hervorragend geeigneten Indikator für den frühen Nachweis einer Schwangerschaft.

Der hCG Kassettentest ist für den schnellen Nachweis des Schwangerschaftshormons hCG in Urin- und Serumproben mit einer Sensitivität von 10 mIU/ml entwickelt worden.

Der Test bedient sich monoklonaler Antikörper, um die hCG-Konzentration im Urin zu ermitteln. Der hCG Test zeigt keine Kreuzreaktivität zu strukturell verwandten Hormonen (FSH, LH, TSH) bis weit über die zu erwartenden maximalen physiologischen Konzentrationen.
